How to Get a C1 Licence for Driving a Motorhome

News

Found your dream motorhome, only to discover it weighs more than 3,500kg? Don't worry – you may simply need a C1 licence.

For many motorhome buyers, the world of driving licence categories can seem confusing. If you've previously only driven a standard car, you may be wondering whether you're legally allowed to drive a larger motorhome – and, if not, what you need to do to obtain the correct entitlement.

The good news is that getting your C1 licence is a relatively straightforward process.

What is a C1 licence?

A Category C1 licence allows you to drive vehicles with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) between 3,500kg and 7,500kg, with a trailer weighing up to 750kg.

This makes C1 particularly relevant to motorhome owners, as many larger, more luxurious motorhomes have a maximum authorised weight above the 3,500kg limit of a standard Category B car licence.

For example, if the motorhome you're considering has a maximum authorised mass of 4,250kg, 4,500kg or 5,000kg, you will generally need C1 entitlement to drive it.

Do I actually need C1?

The first thing to do is check your driving licence.

Some older drivers may already have C1 entitlement as a grandfather right, depending on when they passed their car driving test. Driving licence categories changed over the years, so it's worth checking your licence before applying for anything.

If C1 isn't shown on your licence, you'll need to apply for provisional C1 entitlement and pass the appropriate test.

How do I apply for a C1 licence?

1. Check your existing driving licence
Before doing anything else, check which categories you're currently entitled to drive.

If you passed your car test before certain changes to the licensing system, you may already have C1 entitlement.

If you don't have C1, you'll need to apply for it.

2. Complete a D2 application form
You'll need to apply to the DVLA for your additional provisional entitlement.

This is done using a D2 application form, which is available from Post Offices that offer DVLA services.

You send the completed form, along with your photocard driving licence, to the DVLA. There is currently no DVLA application fee for adding the provisional entitlement.

3. Have a medical examination
This is an important part of the process.

You may need to complete a D4 medical examination, which assesses whether you're medically fit to drive a larger vehicle.

The D4 form must be completed by a doctor or other suitably qualified medical professional.

Your medical will generally cover things such as your eyesight, blood pressure and general fitness to drive.

It's worth booking your medical early, particularly if you're keen to get your C1 licence as quickly as possible.

4. Wait for your provisional entitlement
Once your application has been processed, you'll receive your updated licence with the appropriate provisional entitlement.

At this point, you're ready to start your C1 training.

The DVLA says you should normally receive your new driving licence within around three weeks of them receiving your application, although processing times can vary.

5. Book some C1 driving lessons
Although there is no legal requirement to take a specific number of lessons, professional training is strongly recommended.

Driving a larger motorhome is a different experience from driving a car. You'll need to become comfortable with:

The increased size and weight of the vehicle
Wider turning circles
Braking distances
Positioning on the road
Manoeuvring and reversing
Judging the vehicle's height and width
Using mirrors effectively
Driving safely on different types of roads
A specialist instructor can also familiarise you with the vehicle you'll use for your test and help you prepare for the practical driving assessment.

What does the C1 test involve?
Once you're ready, you'll need to pass the relevant practical driving test.

Your instructor will be able to explain exactly what is involved and help you prepare for the test route and manoeuvres.

The important thing is not to be intimidated by the size of the vehicle. With the right tuition and practice, thousands of drivers successfully obtain their C1 entitlement every year.

What about Driver CPC?
This is an important distinction for motorhome owners.

If you're obtaining C1 purely to drive your own motorhome for private, non-commercial use, you should check whether Driver CPC requirements apply to your particular circumstances.

Driver CPC rules apply to professional drivers using certain categories of larger vehicles, including C1 vehicles.

If you're unsure whether CPC applies to you, it's best to check the current GOV.UK guidance or speak to your driving instructor before booking your test.

How old do you have to be?
The standard minimum age for Category C1 is 18.

For most motorhome buyers, however, the question isn't age – it's whether their existing driving licence includes the necessary entitlement.

Don't let a 3,500kg limit put you off your dream motorhome
One of the biggest advantages of obtaining C1 entitlement is the additional choice it gives you when looking for a motorhome.

Larger motorhomes can offer additional payload, more spacious living areas, bigger garages, enhanced storage and a greater level of comfort – making them particularly appealing for longer trips and extended touring.

So, if you've fallen in love with a motorhome but noticed that it's over 3,500kg, don't immediately rule it out.

You may simply need to add C1 to your licence.

And once you've done that, a whole new range of motorhomes can open up to you.
