Enter a motorhome make or model
If you're thinking about selling, part-exchanging, or simply curious about the value of your motorhome, you're not alone. One of the most common questions owners ask is "How much is my motorhome worth?".
You may have searched online sites such as Auto-Trader to gauge what similar models are selling for or you maybe considering talking to your local motorhome dealer to get a price.
The answer on the value depends on several key factors - and it's not just about age or mileage. A well-maintained motorhome with good features or a popular layout can retain excellent value on your original purchase price.
Certain brands will also fetch better prices thanks to their popularity.
The addition of aftermarket extras such as solar panels, awnings or a wi-fi router, are items that a potential new buyer will be interested in and won't have to pay to add themselves.
One of the biggest contributors to a strong motorhome valuation is a complete service history. Buyers like reassurance that the vehicle has been properly maintained, especially when investing a significant amount of money. Regular servicing shows that oil changes, mechanical inspections, timing belts, brakes and engine maintenance have been carried out correctly and on time. Even if your motorhome is older, documented care builds confidence and helps justify a higher asking price.
In the UK, MOT history also plays an important role in valuation. A clean MOT record with minimal advisories suggests the vehicle has been cared for properly. Before selling, it's often worth renewing the MOT if it's close to its expiry date, fixing any minor advisories as a long MOT can make your motorhome more attractive and easier to sell.
Finally, have you had a recent habitation service? Mechanical condition is only half the story.
The living area of a motorhome is equally important, if not more important - which is why habitation checks matter so much.
A habitation check is an inspection of the motorhomes internal systems and living accommodation, including: damp testing, gas safety, electrics, the water system, appliances, ventilation, and fire/carbon monoxide safety.
Damp is one of the most serious concerns in any motorhome and can significantly reduce the vehicles value. Even small areas of water ingress can lead to expensive repairs if left untreated. Buyers and dealers will often view damp reports or conduct their own damp tests before agreeing to a purchase price. A recent habitation check showing low moisture readings can add considerable confidence and support a higher valuation.
When is the best time to sell a motorhome?
Motorhome values can fluctuate throughout the year. Typically, Spring and early Summer see the strongest demand as most people want to start travelling during these warmer months.
Autumn and Winter can be slower for private sales but less so for dealerships.
Selling during peak season may help you achieve a higher price as the demand is naturally there.
Like the car market, when the new registration plates come into effect in March and September, people upgrade their motorhomes so dealerships normally have an influx of good quality part exchanges following these months.
World events and what's going on in the news can also affect prices, for example demand has increased dramatically in recent years due to the popularity of staycations and flexible travel. When airlines report on issues such as possible fuel shortages or flight cancellations, people choose to not risk overseas holidays in favour of UK stays.
Being lucky enough to pick the 'right' moment can increase re-sale value.
Where can I sell my Motorhome?
Much like selling a car, you can choose to advertise your motorhome privately and deal directly with potential buyers. This often means inviting people to your home or storage location to view the vehicle and decide whether to purchase it.
However, private sales can come with several drawbacks.
You may spend weekends arranging and hosting viewings, only for buyers not to turn up. You may encounter time wasters or individuals who attempt to negotiate heavily on price without any real intention of buying.
There are also potential risks involved with private sales, including bank transfer scams and fraudulent buyer identities, which unfortunately are becoming increasingly common.
Selling your motorhome directly to a dealership, or part-exchanging it, offers a much simpler and more secure alternative. You won't need to deal with strangers or unreliable buyer's, giving you greater peace of mind throughout the process.
Many UK dealers, including ourselves offer a brokerage service. This method offers a higher return for the vehicle owner.
This process involves the dealer displaying and promoting your motorhome on their forecourt until the vehicle sells. When demand is high, this can be a relatively quick process and brings very successful outcomes. At this current time, we are arranging a 4 week turn around to sell customers motorhomes on their behalf.
Overall dealerships provide a safer and more secure financial transaction than you would typically experience with a private sale. The process is usually quick, straightforward and hassle free.
5 Ways to maximise your motorhome sale price
As with everything, first impressions count!
A professional valet can really add to the final sale price. A clean, well-presented motorhome can achieve a significantly higher valuation than a neglected one.
Are there any minor faults that you know about but haven't got around to repair or sort out? Do this before the sale to avoid these minor issues being flagged up unnecessarily.
A constant of any vehicle sale is the condition of the tyres - again well-looked after, legal tyres tell the buyer that the vehicle has been well-maintained.
Remove any DIY additions so the vehicle is at its original condition. While you may consider the item installed to be attractive, everyone's tastes are different and a blank canvas is normally preferable.
Check whether your motorhome has a transferable warranty - this could be a deal breaker for a new owner.
Have your paperwork in order. Manuals, MOT, service records, habitation checks all show that the vehicle has been well cared for and is in great re-sale condition.
Can I sell a motorhome with outstanding finance?
Yes. This is a common situation. Whether you sell privately or to a dealer, you must contact your finance provider for an up-to-date settlement figure. The buyer or dealership will then pay this amount directly to the finance company to clear the debt and transfer any remaining balance to you.
How do I transfer ownership legally?
If selling privately, you must fill in the new keeper details on your V5C logbook and notify the DVLA of the change of ownership immediately. Once the transaction is finalised and the money is securely in your account, remember to cancel your insurance and cancel any road tax.
Key things to remember when completing any sale
Make sure that the payment is secure. Ideally this should always be through bank transfer and wait until a direct bank transfer has fully cleared in your bank account before handing over the keys.
DVLA transfer: Fill in the new keepers details on your V5C and send it to the DVLA. Hand the green 'new keeper' slip to the buyer.
Tax and insurance: Cancel your insurance once keys change hands and notify your finance company if the vehicle has an outstanding loan. Reclaim any remaining vehicle tax directly via the GOV.UK vehicle tax refund service.
So, how much is your motorhome worth?
The answer depends on far more than age or mileage alone. Service history, MOT records, habitation checks, condition, ownership paperwork and upgrades ALL play a major role in preserving your motorhomes resale value.
A well-maintained motorhome with documented history and a clean, dry interior will always stand out in the market and often achieve a significantly better selling price.
