What licence do I need to drive a Motorhome?

Adventure

In the UK, the type of licence you need to drive a motorhome or campervan is determined by both your age and the vehicle’s maximum authorised mass (MAM).

If you hold a standard Category B car licence, you’re allowed to drive vehicles up to 3,500kg. Many campervans and motorhomes fall within this limit, making them accessible without any additional qualifications.

For vehicles weighing between 3,500kg and 7,500kg, a Category C1 licence is required. Some larger motorhomes are in this range, so it’s important to check your licence details to confirm what you’re permitted to drive. Your licence will show the relevant categories along with their validity dates.

Drivers who passed their UK car test before 1 January 1997 may already have entitlement to drive medium-sized vehicles. Those who passed on or after that date, and are over 18, can apply for provisional C1 entitlement if they wish to drive heavier vehicles.

To gain a full C1 licence, you’ll need to complete both theory and practical tests, and usually undergo a medical examination. Costs vary depending on the number of lessons you take and other associated fees.

On our vehicle stock pages, we include the type of licence you'll need to drive that particular vehicle.

For full details on licence categories, visit the official government website. Keep in mind that rules differ slightly in Northern Ireland.
